Government neglect of spiritual education among young people and inadequate youthwork provision may be partly to blame for "yob culture", the ecumenical Faiths in FE Forum has claimed. A new paper entitled Taking Young People Seriously says governments have ignored the spiritual education of young people in FE colleges and recommends at least two hours a week of Spiritual and Moral Education Development (SMD) in FE colleges and on other vocationally based courses. It also takes the government for reducing youthwork provision. The calls were backed by evidence from the Learning and Skills Council and from OFSTED that spiritual and moral education is popular with young people. Further backing came in a Children’s Society report this week which showed that almost three-quarters of young people in towns and cities who pray have a sense of purpose compared to 48 per cent who never pray.
